Why starting the gym can feel so difficult

Earlier this week, I had someone enquire about personal training here in Nottingham.

They seemed keen, asked all the right questions, booked in for a session and then cancelled an hour before. Since then, I haven’t heard anything.

On the surface, it might look like a lack of commitment or a change of mind. But in my experience, it’s usually something else entirely.

It’s often not about motivation

When someone takes the step to enquire and book, motivation usually isn’t the issue. That part has already been overcome.

What often happens instead is that doubt creeps in.

Questions like:

  • “What if I can’t keep up?”

  • “What if I don’t know what I’m doing?”

  • “What if I feel out of place?”

These thoughts tend to show up just before that first session and for a lot of people, they’re enough to put them off.

Gym anxiety is more common than you think

This isn’t rare. In fact, it’s something I see regularly as a personal trainer in Nottingham.

For many people, the gym environment feels intimidating:

  • Busy spaces

  • People who look experienced

  • Unfamiliar equipment

  • Fear of being judged

Even if someone wants to get started, that environment can feel like a barrier.

Why a private training environment makes a difference

This is exactly why I offer training in a more private setting.

Instead of walking into a crowded gym, you’re in a space where:

  • There’s no audience

  • No waiting for equipment

  • No pressure to “look like you know what you’re doing”

  • No comparisons to anyone else

It’s just you, your session, and clear guidance.

For clients who feel anxious or unsure, this changes everything. It allows you to focus on learning, building confidence, and actually enjoying the process.

The first session is always the hardest step

That initial step, turning up for the first session, is often the biggest hurdle.

Once people get through that, things usually feel very different. They realise:

  • It’s not as intimidating as they expected

  • They’re capable of more than they thought

  • They’re in a supportive, judgement-free environment

And from there, confidence builds quickly.

If this sounds familiar

If you’ve ever thought about starting personal training but held back at the last minute, you’re not alone.

It doesn’t mean you lack discipline or motivation. More often, it just means the environment doesn’t feel right yet.

That’s something that can be changed.

Final thoughts

That cancelled session last week wasn’t unusual and it’s a reminder of how big a role confidence and environment play in getting started.

For many people, the key isn’t pushing harder. It’s finding a space where they feel comfortable enough to begin.

And once that happens, everything else becomes much easier.
